Retention

Retention is the final stage of orthodontic treatment and follows the removal of braces or aligners.

It is just as important as the active treatment phase, and it is essential to follow the instructions for the use of retainers carefully if you want to maintain your beautiful new smile.
There are two types of retainers:

A removable retainer, such as a retainer plate or a clear aligner-style retainer, which is worn for several hours a day and can be easily taken out. It helps maintain the teeth in their new position.

A fixed retainer, such as an orthodontic wire, which is permanently bonded to the inner (lingual) side of the teeth for additional support.

The orthodontist selects the appropriate type of retainer depending on the individual case and the original position of the teeth. The first check-up for the retainers should take place one month after placement, and then at regular intervals by the orthodontic specialist or general dentist.

Keep in mind that teeth have a natural tendency to shift back to their original position! Additionally, over the years, changes occur in the oral cavity and forces may act on the teeth, causing unwanted movements.

That’s why the retention phase is usually long-term, with the required wear time gradually reduced as the teeth stabilize in their new position.
