What to do first in case of an emergency
In the meantime, until you can come in for a fix, here are some temporary tips that might help relieve discomfort or prevent further issues.
Emergency case scenarios
The wire may slip out of the tube or protrude, causing discomfort.
You can use a pair of tweezers to gently move it away from the gums and apply a small amount of orthodontic wax for relief until your scheduled appointment.
Metal ligatures may bend outward, causing irritation to the lips, cheeks, or tongue.
You can use a pair of tweezers to gently bend it back inwards and place some orthodontic relief wax over it until your scheduled appointment.
If a band or bracket comes loose but remains in place with the help of the wire, leave it there. If it bothers you, place some relief wax over it.
If the band has completely come off, store it in a napkin or small container and bring it to your next appointment.
In any case, contact our office as the appliances may need to be reattached as soon as possible.
In case of a broken or detached retainer wire, contact us as soon as possible so we can reattach or replace it if it cannot be repaired.
Do not neglect it, as the teeth may shift!
